PSLF and Student Loan Forgiveness

Public Service Loan Forgiveness is one of the most misunderstood parts of student loan repayment. It is an add-on to an income-driven repayment plan — not a separate plan you can choose on its own.

How PSLF fits with a repayment plan

To pursue PSLF you enroll in an income-driven repayment plan and work for a qualifying employer. Qualifying payments accumulate while you're on that plan. Because PSLF sits on top of the plan, the plan choice still matters.

Which loans can be forgiven

All federal Direct Loans — including Grad PLUS and Stafford — can be forgiven on an income-driven repayment plan. Private loans cannot be forgiven through federal programs.

Forgiveness outside PSLF

Income-driven plans also forgive a remaining balance after the required repayment period even without a qualifying employer. That forgiveness may be treated as taxable income, which is why the tax consequence belongs in the projection from the start.

What to verify before you rely on it

Employer eligibility, loan type, plan enrollment and qualifying payment count are the four things worth confirming. Errors in any of them are much cheaper to fix early.
